The rim exterior features an underglaze blue cell-diaper band with gilt scrollwork below. On one side, within an elongated reserve, is a polychrome enamel scene of several figures in a garden; the corner of a building with a moon window appears at the upper left and behind it is a banana tree. On the opposite side, within an elongated reserve, is a polychrome enamel scene of several figures in a garden; the corner of an open pavilion appears at the upper left and a cherry tree appears at the upper right. Scattered across the ground of the vase are anhua or incised, white-on-white butterflies, flowers, and foliage; the ground between these motifs is filled with underglaze blue fish roe-diaper
