DescriptionGlazed earthenware plate molded into a circular form with a shallow well and wide, flat, scalloped rim, decorated in transfer printed blue. The central reserve depicts the surrender of Lord Cornwallis at Yorktown, after John Trumbull. At the center is George Washington astride a white horse; to his left is a group of standing men in uniform. To either side, facing each other, are two groups of mounted troops, with an American flag with stars and stripes waving over the group on the right. Below the central image are the words: “Surrender of Cornwallis”. The rim features four reserves with c-scrolls enclosing a floral spray, alternating with four pairs of roses on a dark blue ground.MarkingsPrinted on obverse, center bottom, under glaze: "Surrender of Cornwallis".
Printed on the reverse, under glaze: a badge of C-scrolls, acanthus, and bellflowers: “George Washington / Bicentenary / Memorial / Plates / 1732-1932 / First in Peace / First in War / First in the Hearts of His Countrymen”. Below the badge is a crown above the words “Crown Ducal / England”.
