DescriptionPainting: A horizontal, rectangular landscape painting of Moore’s House at Yorktown surrounded by cultivated fields with the York River in the distance. A foreground of dark vegetation frames the composition with a single large tree to the left and a horned cow at the center. A smaller outbuilding is set beyond the house, and a split-rail fence extends from its corner to the edge of the painting.

Inscribed on back of panel in ink over cream/green paint: “view of the House at York Town in which the capit-/ ulation was signed on the surrender of Cornwallis drawn/ on the spot by J.G. Chapman of Virginia in 1834./ J.K.P./ P. Kemble Paulding.”

Frame: Original gilded frame with complex molded profile of ovolos and cavettos. The frame is composed of two parts, a frame and a liner, assembled with mitered joints. The outside edges of the frame are painted yellow/brown; later pine struts running the height of the frame are attached to the outside edges.
