This simple silver cup was made by Parisian silversmith Denis Columbier. It was probably one of many made specifically for export to the American market, and may have been purchased or given to George Washington in his final years.

DescriptionRaised silver cup; two lines of reeding engraved just under the rim; "A" scratched on side; small mark stamped on side; three hallmarks stamped on base: Official assay mark of Paris for first standard silver, 950/1000, cock with 1 in a vertical octagon; Unofficial assay mark of Paris, head of Apollo with 1 in an oval; Denis Columbier's marker's mark in a lozenge, "D, a leaping stag, C."

MarkingsScratched on side, near top: "A". Small circular mark stamped on side, about 2.5" away from "A" mark. This may be the discharge or excise mark, which was generally struck on the outside of a piece, on the lip or the rim. Three hallmarks on base: Official Parisian assay mark for first standard silver, 950/1000, cock with 1 in a vertical octagon; Unofficial assay mark, a head of Apollo with 1 in an oval; Denis Columbier's marker's mark in a lozenge, "D, a leaping stag, C."
