DescriptionHistorical scene showing George Washington and the Marquis de Lafayette on the piazza of Mount Vernon. George Washington and Lafayette stand at the center of the piazza. Washington has his arms crossed and is wearing a black suit. Lafayette leans toward Washington with one arm on the back of a chair. Sitting on the piazza is Martha Washington with a young girl laying her head on Martha's lap and another woman sitting at a table with Martha. Sitting on the lawn in front of the piazza are an enslaved African-American woman and a young boy playing with a toy cannon with two dogs. In the background can be seen the Potomac River with ships cruising on it. In front of the Potomac are trees with a summer house in the distance and animals and people milling about the lawn.Published ReferencesAntiques Magazine, (March, 1945): 166-7.
