Family tradition maintains that this elegantly painted and gilt two pint mug was “used daily at Mt. Vernon by Gen. Washington from which he drank milk morning & evening & Cider at Midday meal”.

DescriptionCylindrical porcelain mug with an ear-shaped handle on a shallow foot ring. Overglaze, polychrome enamel and gilded decoration features a yellow band painted below a gold chevron border and above two undulating floral garlands. Sprigs of cornflowers and leaves are scattered between the floral borders across the body. Rim, foot, and edges of handle picked out in gold. The handle has a leafy projection at top and a scrolled lower terminal.
