DescriptionThis painting is a depicting George Washington overseeing the Continental Army crossing the Delaware River, on the night of December 25, 1776, moving from Pennsylvania, which is in the foreground, to New Jersey in the background. On Washington’s left is a group of four men, three of whom are mounted while the fourth is preparing to mount his horse. These four men are identified (clockwise, from top) as General Henry Knox; William Lee, Washington’s enslaved manservant; probably General Nathanael Greene; and an unknown soldier, possibly one of Washington’s aides-de-camp.
Painting is housed in a molded wood frame, painted a glossy black with brass colored circular metal bosses at each of the four corners; painting is held in frame by several modern nails.
