DescriptionHistorical scene of General Lafayette's departure from Mount Vernon. In the foreground, on the piazza of Mount Vernon, George Washington and General Lafayette are shaking hands. Martha Washington, a young woman, and a small girl are looking on. One dog lies on the piazza, and another stands on the lawn looking back at the group. A man in military uniform, holding a small trunk or case stands in the middle distance just to the right of the piazza. In the background can be seen a carriage drawn up on the lawn with an African-American enslaved man holding the reins of the horses. In the background can be seen a summer house and ships cruising on the Potomac River.
