DescriptionHistorical scene of George Washington visiting his mother. In the center of the image stands Washington, dressed in a black coat, holding his mother's hands as she looks up into his eyes. Washington's mother is stooped from age, and wears a number of layers of clothing over he dress, and a cap. Next to Washington is a dog. The meeting takes place in a simply furnished room, with a landscape painting on the wall, a table with a chair behind the figures, and a chair to the left of Washington's mother.MarkingsPrinted in ink on the bottom left corner on the mat board: "Washington's Last Interview with His Mother / Published by William Pate, engraver of Neale & Pate, 1844".
Printed in ink on the bottom right corner of the mat board: "Enroute to his inaugeration in New York in 1789, Washington visits his aged / mother in Fredericksburg, Virginia. This would be his last visit for she died / a few months later."
