DescriptionHistorical scene portraying the death of George Washington. The scene is set in a simply furnished room with a high-post bed where Washington rests. There is also a side table and a chair that Martha Washington sits on. Standing behind the bed are two men, possibly doctors, wearing coats and jabots, one with his hand to his head in a sorrowful expression. Martha sits near the foot of the bed with her hands clasp in front of her in prayer. Near the right side of the image stands an African-American enslaved man.
