William Henry Brooke

BiographyIrish painter and illustrator. Son of the painter Henry Brooke and a nephew of Henry Brooke, the author of ‘A Fool of Quality.’ He began life in a banker's office, but desiring to become an artist he placed himself as a pupil with Henry Drummnd. He made rapid progress and established himself as a portrait painter and draughtsman. His work first appeared at the Royal Academy in 1810, and he continued to exhibit at intervals until 1826. During his career his drawings attracted attention and led to him obtaining considerable employment as an illustrator of books in addition to his painting. He died at Chichester in 1860.
