Elite Americans occasionally chose grass matting imported from China to cover the floors of receptions rooms, galleries, and passages in their homes. This fragment of grass matting was found at the home of John Ridout (1732-1797) in Annapolis, Maryland. George Washington visited the Ridouts on at least one occasion in 1771, and later entertained them at Mount Vernon.
