Engraved plate
As the first President of the United States, George Washington set many social standards that would be followed by later administrations. He and Mrs. Washington entertained a steady stream of guests at the executive residences in New York and Philadelphia, including former soldiers, members of Congress, and foreign dignitaries. Those invited to dine received engraved invitations printed from copper plates, such as this one. It’s simple, yet elegant, design could be customized with the recipient's name, date, and time.
