DescriptionVertical rectangular full-length portrait of George Washington, standing on a path with trees on either side. Washington faces the viewer, with his body turned slightly to proper left. His right hand grasps a walking stick and his right foot is extended in front of his left, as though taking a step. He is dressed in a three-piece black suit, consisting of coat, waistcoat, and breeches; a white shirt with ruffled stock and sleeve ruffle; black stockings; black dress shoes with plain metal buckles; black tricorn hat; and black queue ribbon. Washington’s pose and attire is adapted from Gilbert Stuart’s Lansdowne portrait. The painting is signed at viewer’s lower left: "C Alexander”.SignedSigned at viewer’s lower left: "C Alexander”.
