George Washington's inauguration as the first president of the United States inspired enterprising craftsman to issue commemorative buttons with patriotic designs. This coat button is stamped with the eagle and shield of the Great Seal of the United States below a radiant sun. The surrounding motto, "Memorable Era March the Fourth 1789" refers to the date that was originally set for the commencement of the new government under the Constitution. In fact, Washington did not take the oath of office until April 30, 1789.
