DescriptionHorizontal rectangular image with rounded upper corners. Landscape view of Washington’s New Tomb. A pathway composed of wood planks extends from the lower right to the entrance of the tomb, which is a pointed arch in the center of a red brick wall that rises to a central bay with a brick pilaster on either side of the entrance. Above the entrance is a sign reading “Within this enclosure / Rest / the remains of Gen. GEORGE WASHINGTON.” Washington’s sepulcher is visible though the iron bars of the entry gate. Several figures are gathered in two groups front of the tomb, including five woman in gowns and shawls, three men in long coats and top hats, and two children. Trees surround the scene, with two large obelisks, surrounded by wrought iron fences, flanking the path, and two additional obelisks in the right background.
