Robert Field
(1769–1819), a highly accomplished British-born miniaturist, arrived in Baltimore in 1794. He then spent fourteen years in the United States, working as a miniature painter in Baltimore, Philadelphia, Washington, and Boston. Field was active in Philadelphia in 1800 and was in the Washington, D.C. area by 1801.Though best known for his portraits of George and Martha Washington, he also portrayed other prominent figures such as Thomas Jefferson.
