Prussian-born artist Leopold Paul Unger came to the United States in 1838. He was based in Allentown, Pennsylvania, where he established a portrait business in both oils and miniatures, but traveled for work throughout Pennsylvania and Virginia as well as to New Orleans, Louisiana.
