Richard Cosway
Royal Academician Richard Cosway was the preeminent portrait miniaturist in Regency London. He was renowned for his excellent brushwork, as well as his incorporation of the natural ivory support into his images. Other Cosway hallmarks are blue sky backgrounds, loose brushwork in certain areas, elaborate or fanciful costuming, and the slight enlargement of the sitter’s eyes and heads, particularly in his portrayals of women. He was extremely prolific, holding numerous sittings per day. Cosway’s primary patrons were members of the aristocracy and royalty, and he executed numerous portraits of the Prince of Wales, (later George the IV), and his family.
