Pierre Eugene Du Simitiere
Simitiere was born in Geneva, Switzerland in 1737. He eventually emigrated to the United States by way of the West Indies, and settled in Philadelphia. He was elected to the American Philosophical Society, and was an artistic consultant for the design of the Great Seal of the United States. His portrait of George Washington, done in 1779, would become the basis for the United States penny. Simitiere died in Philadelphia in 1784.
