Forrest was born in Aberdeenshire, Scotland in 1814. He was a student of Thomas Fry in London, and then emigrated to the United States. He spent some time in Philadelphia working for the National Portrait Gallery, and then moved to New York City. He died in Hudson, New York in 1870.
