Elkanah Tisdale was born around 1771 in Lebanon, Connecticut. He was an engraver, miniature painter, and cartoonist. He started his career in New York, and then moved to Hartford, Connecticut and started an engraving business there. His cartoon "The Gerry-Mander" inspired the term gerrymandering.
