John Sartain was born in London, England in 1808. He initially learned line engraving, but in 1828 began to work in mezzotints. In 1830 he emigrated to the United States and settled in Philadelphia, and became a pioneer of mezzotints in America. He also published Sartain's Magazine. He died in 1897.
