BiographyJames Barton Longacre was born in Delaware County Pennsylvania in 1794. He was a well known portraitist and engraver. His most well known work was while he was Chief Engraver of the United States Mint. During his tenure at the mint he designed the Indian Head cent, the Shield Nickle, and the Flying Eagle Cent.
