The numerous cuts and notches on the surface of this wooden vessel attest to its use as a chopping bowl. Using inexpensive utensils such as this, enslaved cooks at Mount Vernon, including Lucy and Nathan, prepared elaborate meals for the Washington family and their steady stream of visitors.
