While signed “G. Stuart,” this portrait of George Washington is a copy after one of Gilbert Stuart’s well-known portraits of George Washington. Stuart was not known as a miniature painter, but he did work in tandem with other miniature painters such as Walter Robertson. The artist of this portrait is unknown, as is its intended recipient, but the market for painted images of the first President remained throughout the 19th century, and still continues today. Washington's likeness appeared not only in art but in needle work and other textiles, on porcelains, ceramics, jewelry, prints, and other items.

DescriptionAn oval, bust-length portrait of George Washington in civilian dress. He is presented turned three-quarters to the proper left, and with eyes toward the viewer. His eyelids are outlined with heavy dark black strokes. The figure wears a white stock and lace jabot highlighted with opaque white under his black coat. Through the white of the jabot some darker green underpaint—perhaps an earlier approach to the coat—is still visible. Washington’s hair is powdered and worn ‘en queue’ with a black hair ribbon. The miniature is lit from the proper left.
The ground is in an oxblood color, with a small area of ochre behind Washington’s head.
It is framed in a floral-patterned black and gold metal case with a top loop; at the reverse is a brown velvet panel.

SignedG. Stuart in what appears to be black ink at lower proper right.
