Generations of Americans have treasured mementoes of George Washington, large and small. This relic features a fragment of porcelain bearing the insignia of the Society of the Cincinnati which Washington purchased in 1786. Pieces of an oak tent pin used with Washington’s wartime sleeping tent comprise its frame.

DescriptionHorizontal, rectangular framed sherd of porcelain decorated in overglaze polychrome enamels with a winged figure, representing "Fame," holding a trumpet in her right hand and the insignia of the Society of the Cincinnati in her left. The sherd is matted with a gold mat with an oval opening, framed in oak, and wove paper pasted over the back of the frame. A nail is inserted into the top of the frame at back, and a thin red ribbon is tied around it.
