This medal honored Lafayette's service in the American Revolution and descended through the family of Nelly Custis Lewis, a granddaughter of Martha Washington. The front features a portrait bust of Lafayette with the inscription: "GENERAL LAFAYETTE / CAUNOIS FRENCH / 1824." The reverse reads: "THE DEFENDER / OF AMERICAN AND / FRENCH LIBERTY. / 1777-1824. / BORN IN CHAVANIAC, / THE 6 SEPTEMBER, / 1757."
