This intriguing portrait has an English provenance from the early decades of the 20th century and was purchased from an English collector in the early 1950s. It has been inscribed with the name of the eldest granddaughter of Martha Washington, Eliza Parke Custis, on the reverse. However when compared with other portraits of the subject (such as the MVLA’s H-4833 and M-3615), this designation seems unlikely. In addition to rather different facial features, this sitter has extraordinarily blue eyes, while Elizabeth Parke Custis’ eyes are consistently painted as brown elsewhere. In certain aspects this miniature resembles a Richard Cosway portrait—notably the enlarged and vivid eyes and frothy confection of a dress.

DescriptionOval, bust-length portrait in watercolors of a young woman, perhaps Elizabeth Parke Custis Law, the eldest granddaughter of Martha Washington. The sitter is presented three-quarters turned, and facing to the proper left as she looks towards the viewer. The portrait is lit from the proper right and there are subtle shadows cast on the proper left side of her face. She wears a white gown with voluminous ruffles at the neck, and a pearl choker-style necklace, which has shadows cast just below it. The sitter has dark curls which are worn loose and full around her face. Her brilliant blue eyes are significantly enlarged, and highlighted by blue shadowing and prominent eyelashes, particularly on the proper right eye. Her rounded cheeks are flushed and have been painted in the same rosy shade as her lips. The background of sky and clouds has dark shadowing at the proper left edge.

The artist’s monogram appears at proper right, just to the edge of the subject’s shoulder.

Encased in a black painted wood or papier-mache frame with gold, oval-shaped inset.

SignedIS? TS? An inscription of interwoven letters including an S in a monogram at left, just beyond the (proper right) shoulder.
