In this print, Peale portrays George Washington as the hero of the Battle of Princeton and as the emerging symbol of America. Peale witnessed Washington rally his retrating militia and thus win this battle. Perhaps in part because the artist was "well acquainted with General Washington," this portrait vividly depicts Washington's dignity and confidence.
