Patty pans - small pans for savory pies, sweet fruit tarts, or puff pastries-came in a variety of materials, from utilitarian tin and copper to elegant Chinese porcelain. George Washington received “1 Dozn China Patty Pans” from his London agents in 1762, part of the first known set of blue-and-white Chinese porcelain used at Mount Vernon. Whether this example was part of that order has not been proven. Its interior features a finely painted landscape with bamboo and huts, while the exterior displays additional landscapes and gadroon molding at its rim.

A scroll-spearhead border encircles the design, while the rim has a complex border of trellis-diaper, sunbursts, flowers and foliage.
