This footstool came from the church pew where President Washington once sat in Trinity Church, New York, New York. The stool postdates Washington’s occupancy of the pew, but according to the last owner, it was found or acquired by a member of the Van Horne family who rented the space after Washington’s departure. Washington worshiped regularly at Trinity for a short period of time in 1790, from the consecration of the new building in March until his departure in the fall for Philadelphia, the newly designated capital of the United States.
