Like all of Martha Washington's grandchildren, Eliza Parke Custis Law appreciated her family heritage and carefully preserved many Custis and Washington relics for future generations. Additionally, she sought to perpetuate and celebrate new family connections. Eliza commemorated the birth of her first granddaughter by purchasing a cream pitcher engraved with: "Grandmother Custis' gift for her darling Harriet Murray Rodgers."
