Like all of Martha Washington's grandchildren, Eliza Parke Custis Law appreciated her family heritage and carefully preserved many Custis and Washington relics for future generations. Additionally, she sought to perpetuate and celebrate new family connections. Eliza commemorated the birth of her second granddaughter by purchasing a two-handled cup engraved with: "Grandmother Custis' gift for her darling Eliza Parke Custis Rodgers."
