This chromolithograph portrait of George Washington was sold to raise money for the Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association’s purchase of Washington’s estate from John Augustine Washington III. A fundraising flier advertising the portrait encouraged Americans to form clubs and subscribe to the print for $1 each. The names of subscribers were then printed in the Mount Vernon Record, the MVLA newsletter.
