DescriptionA Staffordshire blue and white transfer printed pitcher with a view of the Mount Vernon Mansion from the northeast, derived from Isaac Weld’s view published in his "Travels Through the States of North America…" of 1799. The Mansion is depicted as a one story plus garret structure, fronted by the piazza. The ground in front of the Mansion slopes down at a sharp diagonal to the viewer’s left, leading to a view of the Potomac River with a large sailing ship. There are numerous trees scattered around the landscape. The central scene is surrounded by c-scrolls, with floral motifs and acanthus leaves decorating the remaining body. The piece is captioned “WASHINGTON’S SEAT” and “MOUNT VERNON” in several places.
