Le General Washington
George Washington, holding the Declaration of Independance and the Treaty of Alliance with France, stands symbolically on remnants of British bills and proclamations. This engraving was based on a portrait owned by the Marquis de Lafayette, a critical French ally in the Revolutionary War and a close friend of Washington.
